The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) is one of the largest and busiest hospitals in Australia. Even as we tackled the COVID pandemic over the last two years, the RMH continued to build and fit out two new operating theatres, and a third cardiac catheter lab (a specialist operating theatre for heart procedures).
With 16 operating theatres, 3 day procedure rooms and 3 cardiac catheter labs, we undertook 32,354 life-changing surgeries in the last financial year. These ranged from:
- Trauma surgeries (including traumatic brain injuries) – as a state-wide trauma service, we receive patients via road and air for surgery related to trauma resulting from accidents and violence across Victoria. Often multidisciplinary teams of surgeons specialising in trauma, orthopaedics, neuro and vascular all need to operate together.
- Cardiac surgery
- Plastic and reconstructive surgery
- Cancer surgeries – ranging from complex neurosurgery, to prostate cancer, breast cancer, bowel cancer, head and neck cancer, pancreatic and liver cancer.
- Kidney transplants – we carried out 152 life-saving kidney transplants in the last year, and we also help run the National Paired Kidney Exchange.
