Providing the very best of care to all Victorians

Brendon, Manager of the Consumer Lived Experience Workforce at Royal Melbourne Hospital.

One in five Australians experience a mental illness every year and about 45% of Australian adults are affected by mental illness at some point in their lives. The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) is proud to deliver comprehensive hospital-based, community and specialist mental health services to youth, adults and aged people across northern and western Melbourne.

Our interdisciplinary mental health workforce is comprised of 1,800 team members across medicine, nursing and allied health. We work with individuals, their families and carers to identify and achieve their goals, improve functioning and enhance their quality of life.

Brendon understands first-hand how important great mental health care is. After being misdiagnosed for many years, he finally received an accurate diagnosis and care to support his recovery. Coming from a background in logistics management, Brendon is now the Manager of the Consumer Lived Experience Workforce of more than 20 team members.

Lived Experience staff provide direct peer support to mental health consumers in the RMH Emergency Department, Safe Haven program, inpatient, community, residential and specialist mental health programs.

Peer support roles contribute to a range of positive outcomes including an improved sense of hope, empowerment and social inclusion for those accessing mental health services. They provide a warm welcome to community services through the innovative and award-winning Front of House peer support program at our community clinic and Safe Haven programs.

Lived Experience consumer and carer leaders are an integral part of the RMH mental health operational and governance structures, ensuring we respond to the needs of our community.

By purchasing a ticket in our Home Lottery, you can feel proud you are supporting one of Australia’s best hospitals. You are helping to advance healthcare for everyone, every day.

Thank you for your support.
