Brianna was 29 when she experienced a massive stroke, which left her in a coma. When she awoke at the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH), half of her body was immobile, a portion of her skull was missing, and it was uncertain if her unborn baby would survive.
“My case was so rare, my bleed was so big, it would have been physically impossible to save me if I’d ended up anywhere other than the Royal Melbourne Hospital.”
Despite the odds, her baby was born healthy, but Brianna’s journey to recovery was just beginning. Brianna spent the next 12 months at the RMH relearning how to sit up, swallow and walk. She knows she wouldn’t have survived without the care and expertise of surgeons, nurses, therapists and state-of-the-art technologies like the CT scanner that picked up a secondary stroke.
The RMH Emergency Department was designed to handle 50,000 cases annually. Last year we treated 87,000 people. This year, the Home Lottery will help fund a second CT scanner so we can meet the growing demands of our community and treat people like Brianna. By purchasing a ticket in the Home Lottery, you can be proud that your support will help ensure the RMH is always there when it matters most.
